You can use a trigger object, I guess it could be a point of reference so that you can realize that you are in a dream. What you do is keep a dream journal. Over time note what appears frequently in your dreams. For me, it was tsunamis, for you it'll probably be something else. Then tell yourself over and over again that what you frequently see is your lucid dream trigger and every time you come across that in your waking state, ask yourself in all honesty if you are dreaming or awake. So if I saw a wave on TV or in the internet, I would ask myself if I was awake or not. I got closer and closer each time I had a dream with waves and tsunamis till finally I got it right and became lucid. The funny thing is that many times, when I leave the lucid dream, I awake in another dream, precisely like inception. Then over time you don't even need the trigger, you just realize you are in your own dream. This happened to me today. I dreamt I was going to bed in another bed and another house and from that I realized I was dreaming and floated from my bed into the realization what we are all consciousness. It was pretty awesome. Then I awoke from that into another dream. :)
