In his book, "If You Were God", Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan includes a short dissertation on "Immortality and the Soul". Section III specifically elaborates on the Talmudic consensus on "What the Dead Think of Us". It is quite consistent with what other mystical traditions have to say on this very important question that you have raised in your post. It is also consistent with my own near-death-experience as well as various aspects of the documented NDEs of others.

Unfortunately, I am new here and don't have the privilege to post links yet. However, you can easily find Kaplan's discourses online and they clearly address the point that interests you in a very concise, understandable manner.
