From my own experiences with death, it's not so much the violence or external factors but what goes on within is what has a greater effect on one's afterlife or transition.
There is an interconnected-ness, like throwing a rock. Say in one life, I die rather gruesome, pretty angry at being "sacrificed," I can feel it(along with the memories, intentions, as well as results, etc.), same with one who dies with regret, or one who lived well. I also could see/feel, how one who died with awareness, no matter the horrific circumstances, passed peacefully, and with grace, the transition was easier, like slipping off a coat.
