That's a good question I don't have a clean cut answer to it honestly. Consciously leaving my body just seemed interesting to me in the beginning. Another reason is because even when Lucid dreaming I often wake up exactly when it reaches the climax of the dream. At the absolutely best part I wake up. Also it takes some time to realize I am dreaming so I will go half way through the dream or more before turning it into a Lucid dream.
Consciously APing I have control of it (at least most of it) from beginning to end. That is probably the biggest reason I AP just so that I can control it more than I would be able to in a dream/lucid dream. I didn't realize I was APing in my sleep until I actually consciously AP'd. I also didn't realize I enter a trance state often before I fall asleep. Once I meditated into trance state for the first time I was hit with a huge feeling of deja-vu. I had felt that feeling a lot in my life, just never knew what it was.
