PAM Dirac is famous for working on the quantum theory. He believed an aether must exist. Max Planck studied the emission of light from incandescent sources (black body radiation), tried to develop the math to explain it and figured that only certain energy levels was allowed. This seems to be the beginning of the quantum theory.
