Religions might not support the use of intoxicating substances NOW, but at one time they were very much part of their Ceremonies/Rituals. The OT for instance is full of references to the use of Kaneh Bosm.
I live close to a very large Community of Hasidic Jews and believe me they smoke like chimneys while walking home from the synagogue
