Being married 23 years and having learned so much and been through it all, the ingredients to make this recipe work are love, trust, respect and communication. I truly believe that last one there is just as important as love.

I tend to see all those other things included in love.

Theory is one thing, Scarlett and practice is another.

With love automatically comes communication, trust, respect. You can't have one without the other.

I think Hope33 has covered a lot of the ground. And... Going into a relationship, I believe everyone has expectations, conscious or unconscious ones. Mutuality is important. Think about the similar situation in friendships: if I'm willing to give to and "be there for" the person, and my "friend" is not willing to - then maybe that person is an acquaintance, not actually a friend.
