What is the purpose of religion?

I believe the purpose of religion is the answer the following four great existential questions:

1. Who am I?
2. Why am I here?
3. What does it all mean?
4. What is going to happen to me when I die?

In many ways, these are unanswerable questions. Many people are very uncomfortable with the idea of not-knowing the answers to these questions. So in order to feel more comfortable, people invent religion in order to have concrete answers to these questions.

Here are my basic answers but still a work in progress:

1. My consciousness is the Universe's way of experiencing itself. We are all made of the very substance we are experiencing. As human being, I express a common set of Archetypal energies. But I also have a set of unique experiences, points of view, and character quirks that make me endearing or repulsive to people I interact with.
2. I am here to experience God's greatness. I am here to help other people appreciate God's greatness with enthusiasm and happiness.
3. What is all means is everything we experience is part of God's realization of omnipotence. The Universe exist for the realization of unimaginable possibilities. We are here to bring into existence or experience unimaginable possibilities.
4. When we die, we all go into the light and experience God's infinite beauty in an experience of everlasting eternal heavenly bliss. I think everyone gets to go into the light regardless of our earthly sins or how we practiced or not practiced our religion. Going into the light and experiencing God's infinite beauty and perfection is the greatest possible experience we could ever possible have.

So how do you answer these four questions? It's okay to regurgitate your favorite dogma. Or be brave and express what you think in your own thoughts.

There is no purpose in religion. It's just a fairytale for adults, nothing more. You don't need to look at religion for those questions. The only three reasons why we are here is to work, pay taxes, and die one day.

Started off as experiences, sharing and teaching. Then someone decided to distort this into a tool to control and gain power. Yes there are truths in most of the religions but it's still used for control and power.

They've certainly done a number on you haven't they. Good for you getting free from the dogma of religion but you're still believing the lies of the Man.

Religion causes wars and the need to control there is no purpose of it in my opinion

Religion is an old war tactic of divide and conquer. The bible was written by man, for man to control man.

Question 1. Time is consciousness and space is symbolism within consciousness. This locks your mind to a pinpoint of who you are linearly. You can access time and space outside of your own mind through an expansion of consciousness, angles.

2. I honor God.

3. Agree.

4.Not all go into the light when they die, but all eventually will.

Religion as belief system is something different from religion as an institution, and its peddlers.

As yourself, I believe that each one of us should try to learn what they should do with their life.

I don't believe that any religion has that answer, and that most religions don't even look for it. I believe that each one of us should look for answers by turning inward toward a higher knowledge source.

So, I won't answer your questions, because they don't represent, in my opinion, the knowledge I should look for.

My answer to the question that I believe to be the most important is: I, as every other human, is here to evolve by learning to master their emotions, continue developing their intellect, and starting developing their intuition.

I don't believe there is an anthropomorphic God as described by any religion.

Religion, as a system of beliefs, had a positive historical role, satisfying humanity's needs to know, and to be kept in check. Religion as an institution had, in my opinion, some negative contributions.

While not disagreeing with the people who have said that religion was invented as a control measure for the masses. It also has to be said that it has also provided society with a moral and ethical system to live by. Society in general was a much harder place to live in a century or two ago than it is today. They also did quite a bit of the charitable and educational work in society.
Most western countries now provide free or at least affordable education of a basic level for all of the children as well as a social welfare system for citizens that fall on hard times.

Then tell me what I am supposed to believe? That the Earth is some happy rainbow and sunshine place where every life is equal and has a special purpose? That's nothing more than wishful thinking. I used to think differently, but I learned the hard way that there is no meaning in life. If there is a God or some kind of grand administrator up there, then he messed up pretty badly. But by now I pretty much doubt that there is a single deity that is real.

Thanks, but what does that have to do with the point I was trying to make?
