Maiden, mother, crone

Hey everyone! I've been thinking about the term "crone" to describe the Goddess. I get that she's called that because at that point she's old, but isn't that a disrespectful term? The only definition I can find, is 'an old woman who is usually disagreeable, malicious, or sinister in manner', and that's not really what I personally associate with her. Thoughts?

No, it's not really thought of as being disrespectful. Maiden, Mother and Crone has also been known as Maiden, Nymph and Hag. We all know it represents the three phases of a woman's life but also represents the three worlds and the three phases of the moon. There are goddesses who are only a crone goddess and some of them, besides being wise, powerful and strong CAN be sinister at times. The triple goddess is not all love and light, there re many sides to her.

Yeah the word crone was thought up by a man to describe an old wise woman. But I've not found any other more feminist word to use. Still looking.

Thank you both!

The word "crone" has been distorted in our society as much as the word Witch has. Crone does mean a wise and enlightened elder. I use it freely, except when I'm specifically honoring Hecete during the waning/dark moon
