Sir Patrick Moore (9 Dec 2012)

World famous astronomer and former RAF Navigator Sir Patrick Moore CBE, FRS, FRAS has passed away peacefully this afternoon at his home.
From 1940 until 1945 he served as a navigator in RAF Bomber Command, reaching the rank of Flight lieutenant. He first received his flying training in Canada, during which time he met Albert Einstein and Orville Wright while on leave in New York.

Turns out he was not just a world famous astronomer and WWII RAF Navigator, he was also friends with Albert Einstein and a talented musician.

"He once managed to combine his interest in music with his passion for science. In an historic encounter, he played piano, while his musical partner on the violin was Albert Einstein."

He also produced maps of the Moon that were used by NASA in preparation for the Moon Landings.

Also, for British kids of the late 80's/early 90's - such as myself - he was the Gamesmaster!

RIP, Sir Patrick

Never heard of him. He sounds like he was a fascinating individual. May his soul rest in peace.

I'm not sure he was known in the USA, but he was pretty much a house hold name here in the UK. He presented an astronomy show called The Sky At Night from its first airing on 24 April 1957 until his death on 9 December 2012, making it the longest-running programme with the same presenter in television history...

He did a lot of mapping of the moon for the NASA landings !

If anyone deserved to have his ashes fired into orbit, it is Sir Patrick.

Queen guitarist Brian May hit the nail on the head when he said:

"There will never be another Patrick Moore. But we were lucky enough to get one"

A remarkable man. He reached for the stars - and inspired others to do the same.

Now he's passed into the 5th Dimension, he will be visiting all the planets in the solar system, and every corner of our universe :-)
