Essential Oils Toxic to Pets
 

I just started using essential oils in a diffuser/humidifier to help with my sinus headaches. Eucalyptus worked very well. Then I got lavender and peppermint. Hubby just told me that eucalyptus oil can be deadly when cats come in contact with them, even if inhaled. Now I'm really worried that my cats might get poisoned. I have tea tree as well. All the above mentioned essential oils are toxic to cats and other animals. I am limiting my use of essential oils. Are there any essential oils safe for cats that can be used for headaches?

Good idea keeping the pets in the kitchen when you use the olbas oil. The active ingredients are toxic to both pets and children.

Thank you for posting this Berry! Lots of things we can use or eat are toxic for animals. Cats are even more sensitive than dogs. But when you think that a dog's sense of smell is -what? 100 times (?) more powerful than ours, it's easy to see why that sweet scent of lavender might be just overwhelming for them and make it hard for them to breathe. Same goes for incense sticks.

For headaches, a tea made with lavender flowers is supposed to be helpful, so long as there isn't any serious medical reason for the headaches in the first place. The remedy doesn't have to be essential oils in the air. There are essential oils in the flowers, and they are drawn out by the boiling water. Eucalyptus leaves can also be used in a tea.

so, i am guessing the trees or plants these oils comes from, it would not be a good idea to have them in your home either.

Gracey, it depends on the pets. We've had wild peppermint plants and lilies in our yard for years. They never bothered my outdoors cats nor have they tried to bite or eat them. But you are right, it's safer not to have the plants or trees.

I was alarmed to learn that oils could be toxic to cats. It's always best to be careful ~ perhaps you may have a ventilated room in your house, such as your bathroom.

Using a ventilated room is always best. Thanks StrandedSnowMonkey. Love your avatar, by the way. And ventilating rooms for 5 minutes a day in general is supposed to be good for us.

Hmm, I don't have any ventilated rooms unfortunately. I live in 181 sqft loft apartment. Maybe if I just get another fan...tricky.
