Discussed today in the news by science teacher, Bill Nye.

NEO Asteroid DA-14 will come to within 15 minutes of Earths reach, on Feb.15 th.

When it's put into those terms, one REALLY knows just how close it's approaching Earth. When it's put in terms of miles it seems like it's quite aways but in terms of the time it takes for it to travel those many miles... talk about a close shave.

The scary part is... some asteroids that could pose a threat to Earth haven't even been discovered yet. Not to make anyone paranoid or anything of course. But it's a pretty scary possibility that we might not even know of an asteroid about to hit Earth. :\

Debris From Haley's Comet, 6th Century
 

"According to an analysis of Greenland ice that was laid down between 533 and 540 AD, large amounts of atmospheric dust fell on Earth at this time."

Researchers believe the dust came from the Eta Aquarid meteor shower which is created by leftovers of Halley's comet."

"Abbot claims that one explanation is that something large hit the ocean. She claims to have found circumstantial evidence to support this theory.

The Greenland ice cores, she said, contain fossils of tiny tropical marine organisms.

Jenniskens suggested it would cause a meteor shower of a dozen or so meteors. His calculations were confirmed independently."

Comet 209p was detected by the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research at MIT, a.k.a. "Linear", which is one of the few early automatic detection systems on Earth, using Telescope, and computers, to sort and analyze data.

Thus far it has detected some 2,423 Near Earth Objects, (NEOs), including 279 Comets.

The Meteor Shower is expected to appear from a northerly direction aproximately between 7- 8PM, with only a slim sliver of waning Moon present; Around the Constellation of Camelopardalis.

Today or tonight, "Siding Spring" will do a flyby of Mars, with NASA satellites in sighting of it.

I guess it ought to be labeled a NMO, not a NEO.

The meteor showers to happen in a couple days/nights are the Orionids. Or something like that.
