It is not like you could hang out here to get to know the 'Spiritual in the Landscape' (?): https://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-...-mural/8739078 Or here (?): https://scontent-atl3-1.cdninstagram...66358784_n.jpg And in the desert country, it feels - people might just as well come from different ‘planets’ - the cultural gap is so wide. So thank goodness for people like Roberts and Tacey for the "bridges of connection" (another long video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iiq5Fc9l1Oc * |
My absolute favourite artist of all times – Nolan – painting about the Expedition into the Desert Country.
Sorry for so many links to tell the picture story, hope it is allowed (plus I don't even know if I narrate the story accurately). As they start the journey: http://nolan-collection.cmag.com.au/...edition/detail It is a bit hard to stay on the camel: https://media.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/...05x375_q85.jpg Then it starts to get more desolate out there: https://i0.wp.com/blog.bridgemanimag...ize=1028%2C434 And camels can be so stubborn: https://www.tate.org.uk/art/images/w...3/T03559_9.jpg It is cool to find water: https://s3.amazonaws.com/img.aasd.com.au/87577082.jpg But when it rains heavily – the desert floods: https://www.deutscherandhackett.com/...?itok=BKKlXpOk At least they still had their camels: https://s3.amazonaws.com/img.aasd.com.au/93349329.jpg But then the camels either escaped or were eaten. Explorers passed away near the abandoned base camp on their return :icon_sad: : https://www.tate.org.uk/art/images/w...5/P05381_9.jpg * |

Maybe in the Northern Territory, parts of Western Australia and maybe Perth. But never where I was from not in everyday local life and not in the state of QLD. There are some tourist educational/cultural centres and galleries, which we were taken to as schoolkids but the council and government itself is more like trying to get the community to integrate with city standards and not embrace their cultural heritage. I lived in Melbourne, for a while where that mural was painted, and to be honest, you rarely see a single Indigenous Australian - prob cause as you say there's not as much natural landscape for them (and being chucked out). They're more apparent in Sydney but, again, not integrated. It's not fun having others impose their standards on you and the Indigenous Australians are very proud and very angry. Of course, as you have shown through some imagery there are efforts to respect and bring about awareness around their culture and Indigenous Australians as a whole would be going through the grieving and healing and possibly even rebuilding process after one our of prime ministers, Kevin Rudd, acknowledged and apologised for the Stolen Generation in 2008. |
