Having to re-use fanning powder?
 

Do other people also experience that a deck that has required fanning powder to make it possible to shuffle it needs fanning powder again after some time?
My Wildwood Tarot deck needs it again, as does my Work your Light Oracle.
I'd thought and hoped that once I'd used it it'd be done for good.

oh wow, I literally had to look up what fanning powder is. I've never used it before but some of my decks are hard to spread - Fountain Tarot being my key example, thinking of how thick the cardstock is and that it's a matte print (I think).

Are your cards sticky at all? I'm just wondering why the cards (any cards really, not necessarily yours) may get hard to shuffle, for reasons other than basic construction.

I never knew what it was until I asked here about shuffling trouble, and Pisces mentioned the fanning powder. I got it in right away :)

No, they're not sticky. I had to use the powder on these cards after they arrived as they are difficult to shuffle, stick together in clumps.
I do think it has everything to do with the coating and thickness of the stock.
Now Wildwood Tarot is normal thickness, coating doesn't even appear to be mat like with the Work your Light oracle, yet without using the fanning powder it is difficult to work with.

These days there seem to be more and more decks with this problem. Thick cards, mat coating. Kyle Gray's Angels & Ancestor deck is like that, as is the Goddess Power oracle, Work your Light etc.
Thinking about it, these are all Hay House decks. And it looks nice, but very difficult to work with. Maybe Hay House doesn't care much about usability of their decks :/

Pisces, is that why you don't like Hay House decks?

Anywho, I had hoped that after using the powder once or twice, it would keep when the cards have been used a lot. I guess not.
I think it was the 3rd of 4th time I had to do my Wildwood Tarot.

I wonder if this is subconsciously part of the reason I went back to RWS as my
common go-to deck. Thin, shiny coating, not too big, easy to shuffle/spread, cheap and easy to source again if needed... *sheepish grin*

I wonder if a lot of the new decks are trying to be ‘extra’ - premium card stock, gilt edges, etc

Back in the day I was so proud of my riffle shuffle and bridge skills lol.

Now, having accrued many tarot decks, I find it hard to apply those skills. The newer decks do have ‘extras’ and seem hard to shuffle... so I resort to an overhand kind of thing, which at times is less than satisfying, having to wash or cut the deck a lot.

Although Utube videos have been interesting, I doubt I’ll buy fanning powder anytime soon. Lately I’ve been practicing Pagandell’s advice, which I took to mean an overhand shuffle of the cards while doing something like watching tv.

Thanks for your experience, Anne. I had to look up what overhand shuffle is. I believe it is what I always do.
I don't see how this makes a difference when cards stick together in clumps. You will still have that problem that way.
I didn't mean shuffling to mix up the deck, but shuffling to get the cards for a reading. Although I suppose you'd have the same problem with both if the cards stick in clumps.

I also have one deck with quite thin flimsy card. The coating is fine, nice and shiny and easy to shuffle. Each card remains separate all the time. But it can get tricky as the cards could bend very easily.
A couple of years ago I'd never given it much thought, but now, the stock & coating make a helluva difference to the workability of a deck!

I've noticed quite a few publishers cardstock has become difficult to shuffle. Blue Angel are so glossy they stick to each other and Llewelyn has gone for cheaper card which I find chips at the edges.
I actually love Lo Scarabeo and US Games card stock, it's light, flexible and has a slight sheen so the cards shuffle beautifully as did the old Llewelyn cards.

Nah, it's nothing to do with card quality, I just don't vibe with most of their products and creators.
I admit I have caved and got Mystical Shaman Oracle though, mainly because of Jena's artwork and Alberto Villoldo's input. If it had just been CBR as sole author I probably wouldn't have bothered. Oh and I only paid £8 for it in the sale, I wouldn't have paid full price for it.

Sometimes it's weird as for instance the Wildwood tarot is supple deck, not too thick, not too thin. It doesn't shine ridiculously like for instance Barbara HeickleJohn's decks (is that the exact name? Not sure now, haha).
Yet, I do need to powder it occasionally :/

HayHouse... I don't have the same problem. I just go per deck. Same with CBR. Some of her decks I like, others do not resonate at all. And even though I have some of her decks, in general I do not resonate with her, her vids and workshops etc. I had the same thing with Doreen Virtue. Too plastic for me.
But her Wisdom of the Oracle is brilliant, as is the Enchanted Map, and the Goddess Power Oracle. The first 2 shuffle perfectly, the last is too thick and not smooth.
Also HayHouse is Work your Light, which I absolutely love!
And oddly enough Diana Cooper's HH Dragon deck shuffles perfectly whereas other newer on HH decks don't.
I also find the latest (HH?) fad of creating the author's own suits within a deck very annoying. I prefer numbered cards, or alphabetically sorted so I can find them in the booklet.
