Advice from a scientist wanted
 

Hello all

A little bit of backstory

I’m currently studying for a bachelor degree in natural sciences, at the end of my first “module” I will have to specialise. I’m just pondering if any of the sciences give you a sense of spirituality and wonder whilst working ? I’m very drawn to the biological at the moment, possibly due to the fact that a lot of the material is being presented by David Attenborough at the moment :D

My main question is anyone here a scientist or working in the science fields and finding that their job/field also fulfills them spiritually ?

First, I'm not a scientist.

Second, I watch and read a lot of scientists, specifical their lectures. I subscribe to many institutes and schools guest lecture series. I would recommend watching some of them speak on their topics and see what excites you, spiritually.

The various scientists I watch either experience a confirmation bias through their work, or they do not believe in anything spiritual, sometimes actively refuting when their field of study is being used as evidence of a particular theory (cough Brian Cox).

On the other side, each person who believes in some spiritual organization does so - and see evidence of it - in their chosen field, whether chemistry, biology, physics, and even the soft sciences.

I know you wanted someone in the profession to answer but I hope that this gives you another platform to start your own search from.

I'm not a scientist either sorry, but if you want I can help you explore your options, or others on the forum can, if you give us more details about what precisely your options could be? or anything you're leaning toward?

I love nature but not sure what natural sciences entail.. I know a lot of it is bound to be b s considering the constructs of the mainstream world, so that's what I'd be weary of. but there are some options which would be honest and honor nature, right? and if you are working with the Earth/nature then how could that not be spiritual?

What you are asking about is matter and maths, flesh and logos, earth and etheric energy.

Those that reject science do so because they fear the future of metal and power.

I regret not becoming an engineer or a scientist in the colloquial sense.

Natural philosophy has become a taboo word for physics/chemistry/biology/computing, I suspect because of religion taking over.

However most people know a little about it from their peers.

Social sciences seem to be much more grounded in ethics and aesthetics, which I believe are latin words rather than "greek".

Most of my knowledge is in maths rather than matter being more theoretically minded than applied.

However I do write from time to time when it suits me.

Einstein said: "Religion without science is blind, science without religion is lame", because they are two sides of the same coin.

Keep in mind that when science can not explain something yet it may be spiritual.

I can't say that i am a full fledged scientist yet but I do a masters in the natural sciences, specialising currently in the geology and soil/landscape dynamics. I can say that my field fulfills me spirtually. Since it is so connected to the earth and feel like a deep desire within me is fullfilled when I gain more knowledge about the earth and its dynamics. This is because our field of study explains the material side of the earth which is essential to your understanding if you want to explore it in a spiritual sense as well since I think that the spiritual and material world are greatly intertwined. I think that studying natural sciences will help you connect to your surrounding even further as it is made up from a material and spiritual aspect. Therefor increasing my knowledge in natural sciences fulfills me deeply as has been said before, both are 2 sides of the same coin.

Science is a way to explore and understand the physical realm and spirituality is a way to explore and understand the non physical realm. One does not have to rule out the other and I firmly believe that a decent understanding in both will help you grow greatly as a person.

You're one step ahead of me! I'll be able to apply for college maybe next year.

Have you thought about really analyzing what it is about the biological that's striking a chord with you? If you knew what it was, maybe you could look around at other fields or even talk to scientists who maybe aren't spiritual and see if the things they do on a daily basis have that element in them that's fulfilling to you?

Hameroff and Penrose have discovered that the brain has microtubules that are quantum capable. While Penrose - a Nobel Prize winner - has no interest in Spirituality or religion, Hameroff certainly has. Wouldn't it be fun if a study of those microtubules could answer so many Spiritual questions, like what is God and do we create our own realities?

Nassim Haramein also believes that Spirituality is the science we don't yet understand, and he's doing some pretty ground-breaking work.


Other than the Einstein quotes, I think Max Planck was talking about God when he referred to the intelligence behind the Universe, Nikolai Tesla was openly Spiritual and said that science should study the non-physical and on it goes. The issues aren't so much between science and Spirituality or religion, but more between Spirituality or science versus everything else.
