Treadmill Or Outdoor Running

Which do you prefer or which do you think gives you better results?

I like to do both. I prefer outdoors running though. It gives me more freedom in movement. I can go backwards, sideways (left side forward), sideways (right side forward), zig-zag, sidesteps, sprints, etc. Which improves your footwork if you do other sports. Also the feeling of the sun, and the breeze motivates me to run longer. It becomes more of a dance and a joy than a workout.

But i also realize the treadmill has its benefits if you're looking to increase your speed. While running outdoors its easy to slow down without realizing it but while on a treadmill you can set it at a certain speed and you would have to remain at that speed for the duration of the time you set yourself. So if you're looking to increase speed and endurance perhaps the treadmill would be of greater use.

To me, there is nothing more rewarding than outdoor running. I prefer outdoor running in rain, shine, snow, cold. I am game. The only thing I don't like about outdoor running is the weathering of your skin.

Indoor is good, I like to change the inclines on the treadmill. I noticed the marathon runners in my gym don't use the treadmills, they use the indoor tracks.

I love outdoor running. It's beautiful and free to see the world. Also you can't just hit the stop button and be back at home. You have to run or walk back.

I mostly do the tread mill. I would prefer to do outside, but my fear of dogs over rides me. I use to jog along the wabash river. i loved it. i would jog for miles. around here where i live now is so country and a lot of people have big dogs on no leash and no fence.

That's how it is in Puerto Rico and i almost got attacked by a large dog because of that. Yeah, location is a huge factor. Puerto Rico is a beautiful island and you feel that nice tropical breeze but you need to be careful when running outdoors. Lose dogs, and the way the sidewalks are, make it easy to trip and fall.

Off road running is supposed to offer a better workout than road or treadmill, in terms of working the muscles more thoroughly. The uneven ground see to it. It's also less impactful on joints.
Plus you get to run amongst nature.

As for speed building, you can always make a ciruit & use a laptimer to give yourself something to aim for.

That sounds a wise move Gracey, as some uncontrolled dogs just love a runner and will give chase. And you don't need that. What a pity there isn't a more peaceful place to run.
(And even the little yappers can be ankle-nippers!):D

Talking about dogs....my dog taught me how to run. I used to 'go jogging'....but she showed me how to run when I felt like it -and wow! That was a whole different experience. We'd go for a 5 mile or so hike, then just break out into a real run/dance for as long as we had wind for it! That was my favourite way to run. Real joy, not work.

I like both but I have seen that outdoor running gives me the best results but with the horrible weather running outside not good.

Outdoor running for me hands down.
The treadmill gives me a headache...besides, nothing compares to the cool, crisp air in my face and lungs.
Was supposed to start my 7 kilometer routine today, but will be doing it tomorrow...the weather is finally permitting it...I'm excited!
