Ten Commandments.
I wonder who decided which 10 Commandments to use. There are two different sets which obviously don't match.
Exodus 20. 1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. 3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. 4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 5. Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. 6. Thou shalt not kill. 7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. 8. Thou shalt not steal. 9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ***, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. Exodus 34. 1. Thou shalt worship no other god: for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. 2. Thou shalt make thee no molten gods. 3. The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. 4. All that openeth the matrix is mine; and every firstling among thy cattle, whether ox or sheep, that is male. 5. Six days thou shalt work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest. 6. Thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the first fruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the year's end. 7. Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven. 8. Neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the passover be left unto the morning. 9. The first of the first fruits of thy land thou shalt bring unto the house of the Lord thy God. 10. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk. |
Are those second lot of commandments in the OT? I have not seen those before.

Yes Honza, Exodus is in the OT. In the Jewish Tradition there are 613 Commandments. |
I would call them nine commandments, the fourth commandment is a 'Ceremonial Law' which was for OT Israel.
There are however hundreds of commandments, “Thou shalt” appears 965 times in the OT. While “Thou shalt not” appears 204 times throughout the OT. There are over 700 commandments from God in the OT. Not all of them are God speaking! It's interesting, Jesus summed up all the Law and prophets into two commandments in Matthew 22:36-40 kjv. Keeping the commandments won't earn you salvation. If you break one commandment, you will have then broken them all. Isaiah 64:6 kjv says: But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Sinners are saved by ceasing from our own self-righteous efforts and resting upon the finished redemptive work of Jesus Christ. Jesus paid a debt that He did not owe, because we owed a debt that we could not pay. Only through the blood sacrifice of Jesus Christ can anyone be saved. |

' because we owed a debt that we could not pay ' What was that debt that we couldn't pay? ' If you break one commandment, you will have then broken them all. ' What was the point of Commandments then? |

Good question for the Judaism section. Christianity only has 2 commandment which is really 1. Love one another. |

Christianity also uses the Ten Commandments  Catholic Commandments. I am the LORD your God. You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day. Honor your father and your mother. You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods. While the entire Judeo-Christian tradition uses the same Scriptural content for the Ten Commandments, their exact division and numbering varies. |

So groups of people do all manner of divisional expressions and call it Good or Right. But until they receive Divine Love in there Heart and learn to treat others with Love from the Spirit, they just recite dead scriptures that have no Life and call it good and better then them or those people or like that. Both Paul and Peter had this discussion and Paul won out and Peter relented. Good thing Mary was not there or I would have said "Peter,Paul and Mary" |
