came across this recently and was immediately impressed so thought i'd share. not sure if its been discussed here before..seems to be straight from the horses mouth

353. All conquering and all knowing am I, detached, untainted, untrammelled, wholly freed by destruction of desire. Whom shall I call Teacher? Myself found the way.

60. Be not concerned with other men's evil words or deeds or neglect of good: look rather to thine own sins and negligence (lit. "sins of commission and omission": things done and undone).

i like very much the last one. i see a common theme from other great teachers who expound, as i see it, the perrenial wisdom (wu wei, la vie negative, the great negation(when you put aside that which is not love, love remains, but to seek or cultivate love is to project limits on it and deny, only through knowing the false, what love is not (jealousy, anger et) can the other be).

compare that last quote from the way of virtue (number 60) with these 2>

jesus: let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

and

krishnamurti: in the condemnation of others lies the justifcation of ourselves.

had to get that out, been inside for weeks. thought someone might be interested though i probably won't be about to discuss it, atb..

I like the first one best :-) When we get negativity from people, it's so easy to give negativity back. But by doing so we are only hurting our own spiritual development and delaying our enlightenment. Only by love and forgiveness can we move forward.

I only loosely follow a few Buddhist beliefs but I'll add my own tidbit, since it fits with the last principle:

"Looking at anything in the scope of evil, is also looking down on it in indignation. In essence, we are doing the very thing we are championing against."

The truth is, there are actions, consequences and unwise decision. But even unwise decision fit within a soul's growth potential.

another i liked is::

"the fool who knows his folly is so far wise, but the fool who thinks himself a wiseman is called a fool indeed."

most folk want to be something...good, wise, helpfull, noble, virtuous etc; and hide or sweep their inanities under the carpet, covered over by positive affirmations and the like...only in knowing what you are, leaves the window open for the breeze to enter, if it may. if you're not already enlightened, then you're in a mess, and better to recognise that, so you can then "move forward", than to assert, which is out of fear of being nothing, that you are good, whole, wise, awakening, loving, lovable etc etc.

i like that too, "whom shall i call teacher?" i find the great teachers deny the role of the guru, as "remover of ignorance", as if a teacher says something and you understand it, it's yours...no-one can make/help you understand, no-one can remove your conflict for you...only you can understand your problems...someone might give prompts, but you have to see the truth or false in the words, you.

i was listening to this earlier..."if you know how to read the book of you, what need have you of scripture?"

thats not to say that a section of text from a script can't be truthfull, as the notion, or truth, that we are our own teachers, came from a piece of script (possibly transcribed). i think its trying to get away from the idea of reliance on spiritual authority, which invariably makes children out of us. there seems to be an idea that another, from the outside, can free our mind for us, be that jesus, buddha or who-ever...if that were so, i wouldn't be here fumbling with it :) we are our own saviours, or not, as the case seems to be.

I love this. It rings true all the way. Too many know- it- alls out there, eager to point out others' flaws and mistakes, not talking a moment's time to take a peek inside themselves and see who they truly are...who they'd like to be.
