I just graduated high school, so this poem is about my friendships:

Friends and secrets, bonds unbroken,
Behind closed doors our hearts are open.
Laughing mouths and aching sides
Giving presents, giving rides
Though with other things memory fades,
I will never forget those days,
I will never forget those days.

Though they tell us we must part,
We go in body, not in heart.
As friends a shared heart is our lot
And let that heart be broken not
Though with other things memory fades,
I will never forget those days,
I will never forget those days.

Through time and years and love and fears
We grow and change and go
And where you'll be across the world
I may not ever know.
Though with other things memory fades,
I will never forget those days,
I will never forget those days.

Just something I was inspired to write one evening:

One by one, candles blown out,
Darkness within and darkness without.
Fathers stir a dying fire,
As the waves on the levy creep higher-and higher--
Lights out below, star's light above,
Mothers tell stories that children dream of.
Lullabies are heard from darkened rooms.
Heavy lays dew on September's late blooms,
God's in his heaven, all the world seems aright,
And the town's safely sleeping beneath cover of night.

Something I wrote before my grandmother's death:

May I see your face just one more time
Before mine falls to tears?
I shall hear your music never more,
Nor run up to you at the front door.
May I hear your laugh just one more time
Before the house is silent?
I shall never again dress up in your clothes,
Or make up surprises as you doze.
May I hug you one more time
Before my arms are empty?
Never again will I perform for you,
As I've done before and now cannot do.
My love for you is beyond worth,
Starlight and moonlight, heaven and earth.
I miss you, dear, but not for long,
Soon I'll join in yuor immortal song.

I'm not going to pretend these are great or anything, but I thought I'd go ahead and post them.

ShootingStar7123,

The nice thing about poetry is that, being personal, it doesn't really need to be judged, and each reader gets to decide if it's great or not. Your poem for you grandmother is one of the most moving and lovely tributes I've read in 50 years as a poet. It is so good that any poet would be proud to be able to say they wrote it.

If you'd like to share these and more of your work, and have an audience of fellow poets and readers who love poems, follow the link in my signature. After registering, read our posting guidelines to see what our wants and needs are, and then post away. I'd love to host your poetry.

I think that this is an excellent response and I suppose it is what I would expect from a writer. You could not have summed up the ideal of poetry any better, tiltjlp.

As for the poetry ShootingStar7123, it's really good and stays true to the subject(s) you were writing about.
