I was just wondering. If your family line all the way till you where born both grand parents where shawman and you mom was not but your dad was but don't practice due to religon bliefs could that make you a shawman as well? Non of my family will tell me about my trible history or teach me our old ways I feel I have some great gifts but don'tknow how to use them or expand my gifts. I am not full native but bearly enough to concider native. My tribes are Inuit and thlinket. I would love to learn more about my history then just reading articals (whitch I have done).

thank you for your oppinion and inputs.

My knowledge of the northern people is quite limited, but from what I've read here there should be some shamans available that may be able to help you.

All you need to do is ask. Ask your God, the earth... Whatever it is you hold high. Just ask and you will recieve guidance. I too have native American in my ancestry, and was not really taught much along their beliefs. I have always felt connected to them though. As an adult, that is exactly what I started doing...asking and listening, and paying close attention to my surroundings. Even if you can't find a teacher- there is still always one there, you just have to ask.

Booshoo, Aaniin, Imsteinhebel, from Treaty 1. Our spirits tell us the truth, quietly at first, until we begin to trust them more.

The sad thing about our Indigenous history is so many of our older relatives stopped speaking about our ways because they could be imprisoned or tormented by doing so. Many of them also stopped to "protect" their children. My Dad did - he stopped speaking his Native language, or practicing any of his grandmothers' ceremonies, because of the very real threats of racism.

Keep looking, though. Keep asking for teachers/Elders/Medicine people to come to you ... and if you feel a good "fit" with who comes, offer them Asema - Tobacco - and ask them to help you learn more about the gifts you sense you carry. Our deeper yearnings will always lead us to what will help us if we keep open and stay humble.

Good luck, may help and guidance come to you. Keep us posted!

One other thing, if you'd permit me to share: use caution when you get teachings from written work. There are some books out there that are published by people who have not received these teachings in the appropriate way and are making money on publishing what is sometimes inaccurate information.

Not that I know it all - I know very, very little. But the best teachings I've ever been gifted with - that shook me with the power of truth - came from our old ways - the oral teachings and stories from the Wisdom Keepers. Miigwetch.

Shamans are Shamans, and they dont learn it from a book. Hollywood and contemporay litature define to us what shamans are. Look beyound that and into yourself to know what a Shaman realy is!

No.

There are no shamans in native culture. :laughing9: There are medicine people.
And there are very strict rules, you can't just become one.

Your traditions will not be written down. They are passed down orally.
So you should find a mentor to teach you if you really want to learn the old ways.
