I've tried pranayama ( also spelled pranayam ) and have experienced its mental benefits. The pranayama I've tried is a sequence of breathing exercises which is a subset of sequence taught by Swami Ramdev. The sequence I've tried is: Bhastrika -> Kapalbhati -> Bahya -> Anulom-Vilom. My personal favorite is Bahya using which I am able to raise my kundali energy. I've experienced that doing Kapalbhati before it increases the energy available to be raised up. And doing Anulom-Vilom after it feels like refilling the kundali. The mental benefits are experienced (by me) when doing Bhastrika and when doing Bahya. I've also used pranayama to change my body's heat: In winter season I was feeling cold while taking bath, I did Bahya pranayama while standing to increase my body's heat. Also, I was giving written exam and the fans above me were not working, I silently and secretly did sheetali pranayama to decrease my body's heat.
