I've recently bought a lovely deck of Tarot cards (Linda Ravenscroft's Mystic Faerie Tarot deck) and it comes with a little book that gives you a little story for each card. However, that isn't very helpful to getting to know the cards and their meanings.

Any ideas or suggestions for someone who is totally new to this? :)

Laura, there is good basic site that has helped a lot of people. It is based on the Rider-Waite tarot but can be used with all the R-W clones. It gives full interpretations for all the cards AND also has a series of lessons

practice and more practice and some more practice.
use your cards as much as you can, give yourself daily readings. spend time looking at your cards, maybe try to meditate with them.
write down your thoughts and emotions about each card.
and take your time. the more you use your card the more easier it will get. don't try to memories each card, but try to "talk" with your cards, listen to what stories they tell you.
it is a bond you are forming with your cards and it is a new language that you are learning.
and enjoy your practice. it is fun!!!
