Violence won't achieve anything, especially an end result.
i dunno, if someone breaks into my house and threatens my family, i see no alternative. i hope to someday though

I think the above 'points' are more in reference to what you choose to do as you go through life don't you think? I don't see a suggestion that you shouldn't defend yourself? More like, are your actions in the normal course of your day, supportive of a violent nature or encouraging of violence toward other beings. Like if you had a choice between doing a kind thing (a compliment to a plain girl) or a cruel thing (reminding her that she is plain and less worthy as a result). Do you choose the path of compassion or do you choose to be callous and cold? Do you choose mercy or do you choose death? Emotional, physical violence......if there is no compassion, it is violence.
