Stone alone, this isn't what we are...none of us is in truth entirely independent. However, we do have limited free will and it's ours for the giving. Many people give up their independence to others and essentially become their slaves. This can be a serious error if we give up our ability to think and choose to those whose goal is domination of others (such as Hitler demonstrated).

You can easily give up your independence but you can never relinquish your responsibility. So, I would take care to give it, if you choose, to one who is worthy and trustworthy.
