Could anyone help me please?

I have had a cold the past couple of weeks and used ginger honey and lemon infusions etc and this has shifted the head cold fine.

My problem is my chest is very heavy with phlegm and I cannot seem to move it. The only relief I have had is taking barley malt, but that doesn't shift the phlegm, any idea on a home grown expectorant to help shift this please. I haven't had a cough cold like this in the last five years :icon_frown:

n-acetyl-cysteine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetylcysteine), an amino acid (get it at the health food store) is an expectorant. Lobelia (http://www.herballegacy.com/King_Dosages.html)taken in large enough quantities is an expectorant. http://http://www.herballegacy.com/King_Medicinal.html

Get a jar of honey, it doesn't have to be raw. Buy some white onions. Pour the jar of honey in a big bowl, cut up the onions lenghwise so they are still round like they do for burgers put it in the honey, cover with plastic wrap and keep over night on your counter, then take out the onions in the morning and take as much as you want every hour usually I do about 3 tablespoons I've found that it helps me, onions are a natural antibiotic and I've heard a lot of relief from coughs due to this. Do you by any chance have access to a sauna?

Spiritlite, thank you. I had forgotten about onions :icon_eek:

I remember my Grandmother used to tie an onion around her neck and then go to sleep.. I think your tip with the honey sounds much more user friendly, not to mention how the bedclothes must have smelled after a few days of it.

I don't have access to a sauna, so resorted to a towel and a bowl of steaming water with a combination of Eucalyptus, Lemon, Rosemary and Peppermint essential oils in it.

I also got some Balsam from the Herbal shop which contained Aniseed oil
/Capsicum / Ginger and Clove oil.

It took a day or 2 to loosen up but I have not stopped blowing my nose 'expectorating' my chest since !!

I am feeling so much better now so thank you again for all the help given, I am truly grateful.

Cayenne pepper caps are excellent. When I began using them I stopped using a daily decongestant. I take up to 8 a day if congested. Take w/ food if the stomach is sensitive.

Walmart has an inexpensive supplement brand, Spring Valley. They are about $3 per 100. For a supplement such as this that is just ground up material, requiring no processing a budget brand of supplements is OK.

Chlorophyll to help boost alkalinity can be useful. I like chlorophyll softgels (Chlorofresh). Choose one that is made from alfalfa as this if very alkaline.

The active ingredient in cayenne is capsaicin.

Cabbage leaf extract. Also get someone to pummel the phlegm loose. This sounds to me like bronchitis. Also friars balsam helps to loosen the phlegm.

^^^^

Gerryh, the Friars Balsam is good I have had some of that too, I love the taste of it! A few people said I ought to have gone to the Doctors but I am anti antibiotic, hence managing it myself, with a little help from the good people on this forum

Now someone had told me to mix cayenne pepper with vinegar and take it 3 times a day but I chickened out of this one, I didn't know about the capsules. In the UK we have ASDA supermarkets which are owned by Walmart so I may be in luck there.

I was just about to post NAC. However, lobelia will make you vomit in large quantities.

Cough medicine that only contains guaifenesin, like Mucinex will help a lot, too.
