A little while ago I had enough time to make some art -- I decided to do studies to improve my technique, but that was as far as I got before life intervened... I hope to do more soon, and do something with all this technique rather than more studies, but here they are anyway. Maybe knowing they are here will spur me to find the time...

Wow! You are good!
I'll bet you like to learn about things that you draw. Like study why a rock looks like it does as part of the project of drawing it...........

With rocks no, but as you can see, with bodies yes!

It dovetails with meditation as well. You recall that conversation we had about chi penetrating your anatomy, and you can learn to feel/"see" all these structures internally.

Have you seen this (http://www.healthline.com/human-body-maps/)? Makes that process a lot easier....

EDIT: How come no WhiteShaman thread in this forum?

Blimey - these are really good.

What is your medium for the rocks/pebbles? I adore the second one - very grey but the light hitting the top of the rock is incredible. Bravo! :color:

You are like DaVinci.........he is my hero. i like to learn about things that I draw......especially rocks!

I don't have an art thread.......I don't know why. Can I share a quick one here?
Hope you don't mind, I'll only post one.
I gotta run soon........this is a portrait I did of my deceased brother.

@Squatchit -- thankyou... I almost wish you hadn't said that, because it means I should try to work on it more... medium always = pure watercolours.

@WhiteShaman that's really great! It's time for you to make your own thread. Come on, seriously.

As for Da Vinci, ok... I didn't actually get those muscles from a corpse I dug up you know that? :)

Da Vinci was the real thing.

They're all really nicely done. I've always been drawn to pencil/charcoal drawings and esp portraits which I used to be excellent at in my late teens early 20's. So many great artists here at SF~*

That's really nice of you guys, thanks so much.

Like I say, I really have to put this stuff together in the way it was intended, which was going to have more of a spiritual angle. But I haven't figured it out yet and don't have the time atm.

Like I say, I really have to put this stuff together in the way it was intended, which was going to have more of a spiritual angle.Actually, whether intentional or not, I think you already did put a spiritual angle on it... I especially like the one Kaere reposted - with the rock cliff... and the sun shining beyond. It makes me wonder what's on the other side... some challenges to find out (rock climbing isn't easy!) ... but whatever is over there is brilliant and worth it! :icon_sunny:

Oh well I'm glad I conveyed something like that, but where I was going was to use the realistic skills to render something beyond the normal. I hope it will still come together!

It's me again. :D

You mentioned that this is pure watercolour - how did you get the light on top of the rock? Is that the white paper underneath? If so, it's bloomin' marvellous. My white parts tend to end up mucky - I get too involved in the water part of watercolour and the colours run...:tongue:

It is white paper, and it's done with masking fluid -- don't know if you've ever tried using that.

Basically a liquid latex. You paint it onto the picture where you want it to remain white, and it dries forming a mask. When you're done with the darker areas you just peel off the dried fluid.

They're awesome drawings.

The cliff face looks cold and uninviting and you just wanna walk right over the top of it and onto the warm rock face...lol

You know what Prokopton...don't hassle over it. I also did art most of my life and worked hard on improving it. Then life happened and I haven't managed to get back into art for nearly 20yrs. Sometimes I'd love to pick up a pencil or pastels again, but I will some day and so will you.

Cheers

Ah yes, I should have thought of masking fluid. I've used it in the past, but I tend to work with rougher paper and it has a habit of ripping the paper. It's a great tool with smooth paper.

I do always use smooth paper, that's what I prefer.

There are various tips for using it -- keep specific brushes just for that, and work a bit of soap through the brush before you dip it in the fluid. It ruins brushes very easily so don't use good ones.

But if you work in watercolour there are some things it makes possible that simply wouldn't be otherwise.

Hiya guys

I have a rubber brush used specifically for masking fluid. It's much more controllable than a normal brush (imo) and has a really pointy point to it. :D

Prokopton
26-05-2011, 01:59 PM
I tried one of those but it didn't hold enough fluid to be worthwhile for me! With the precautions I take I've never lost a brush to the fluid anyhow...
