Anyone else out there who should be sleeping but isn't. What's keeping you up? A lot of thoughts with no place to go? Let them out here and sleep well. :hug3:

An overactive imagination keeps me awake alot of the time... Always connecting seemingly random information. I know some people who can fall asleep as soon as their head hits the pillow. My mind wanders with curiousity.

Random thoughts and ideas... Such as wondering why the native turkey population has boomed so well these last few years? Is it the rain? Everything was so dry in January, then it rained and now it seems like the turkeys are overtaking the humans in the area. Apparently their numbers are declining and their abundance is often determined by the goodwill of householders... This may mean that soon the humans on this property will not be able to be easily spotted through all the turkeys. Visitors will have to wade through acres of turkeys to find the humans!

The rainforest is thriving and returning here.... Thanks to the help of the bush turkey.

This is a lovely idea Hallow.... sometimes ones thoughts have to go somewhere. Even if there pointless. My brain wanders all night long. I have to be up at night when the rest of the world sleeps. But there's nothing like the silence and Stars of 3am. There's a special peace in the darkness. A special connection to the Earth during the 5 min of twilight 2xs a day. During those times you can feel the Earth going into it's daily peaceful slumber also you can feel it waking up and taking stretch getting ready for the busy day ahead.

That is the one... they are very friendly birds amongst us mortals, always eager to come inside for dinner.

In the local language they are called "wogon" or "wogan", I am uncertain of the correct spelling. It is an onomatepia word which means that it is named after the sound it makes. A sound which I have rarely heard if I am honest... They are not overly vocal creatures.

I am fairly certain that "kookaburra" is also an onomatepia word as well....kind of a fun sound to impersonate in a laughing tone. I love our Aussie birds hahaha.

Lol... Very fitting indeed. Those turkeys go bananas for bananas.

We had a banana plantation here and we had to learn to outsmart such creatures to ensure we could harvest a steady supply of the herb/fruit. I am never sure if the humans win or if the animals win! I am pretty certain that turkey intelligence trumps human intelligence most of the time.

I respect the turkeys though, without them, no rainforest, without the rainforest, no life :D

I am so glad that we have mosquitos and yet no malaria or ross river fever! Yay.... Winning! Inspite of the lack of mosquito born diseases though... They still manage to keep me awake at night with their high pitched squealing and insatiable desires for my blood.

Hi... I went through a period of insomnia.... It's SO frustrating... I saw a link from a doctor that swears by this.... Going back to when (can't remember details).... There was a group of "people" that adopted this approach ... They went to bed, about 9pm... And slept for 3/4 hours ....then they got up and did things.... Housework... Cooking a meal.. even socialising for an hour or so... Visiting neighbours etc. Then after a couple of hours they went back to bed for another 3/ 4 hours ..... He swore blind it worked. I tried this... As my problem wasn't getting to sleep... It was staying asleep.... And it Does work...!!!....

I can be in deep sleep but their noise will wake me up. The best situation is one where you gotta deal with a big fat mosquito. They are slow and easy to spot. The smaller ones are a real problem to spot. Keeping the lights on can help keep them at bay but then I can't really sleep with a light on.

Bloody mosquitoes!

Mosquitos are my most hated creature. That buzzing in the ear is the worst as well. A fan really helps to keep them away too. There horrible flyer's a fan will blow them away.

Hi.... There is absolutely nothing worse ... This must be dreadful... I have brief periods of insomnia... Well I don't even know if you'd call it insomnia, I can go to sleep, but I can't stay asleep... Tonight is a case in point .. 3 and a half hours and I'm awake again, and up now.

..... Ah so you are one of the night hero's looking after us while we (try) to sleep... This works well for you. Night work can create sleep problems for some if they are not used to it. My ex husband went through a period of having to work nights, and he couldn't sleep at all during the day, especially in summer with all the noises outside... It's good that your lifestyle works for you...

If you fight what is natural for you as a individual you often run into problems. Up until I started working I had a lot of problems with sleep. I struggled in school and at day time jobs because my brain DID NOT even start to function right until later in the day, buy that time everything was done. I been like that for as long as I can remember. Don't fight it, go with it and make it work for you.

My wife has the same problem but she's going through mentapouse and blame's it on hormones. Hahaha. I would hate to be a woman dealing with that. It sounds like a rollercoaster ride I wouldn't want to be on. Actually I am 3/4s on that ride but at my age I have learned NOT to mess with a woman that's having hormone problems. No man will survive. Hahaha

From what I hear from other women going through it. I think she's dealing with it better than most. From a male point of view it's a strange thing to experience. It's like a totally different person briefly comes out. Been dealing with it for nearly 5 years now. Most of what I notice she becomes almost frantic. She starts zipping around the house cleaning stuff like a crazy person. Think it's her way to deal with whatever is going on, that's the worse of it so I really can't complain. I Hurd a lot worse stories from other woman. Most guys don't talk about it at all. The mention of "hormones" to most guys send a sharp spear of pain and fear down there spine. Think it's just an instinctive fear drilled into our DNA over hundreds of thousands of years.

What do you mean? I have no doubt going through hormone stuff is really hard on the person dealing with them. My wife and I talk about it often. I do my best to understand what's going on so I can be supportive or simply stay out of the way. Whatever option is needed at that moment.

.... It really CAN be a most difficult time for a lady.... And in a way you're right... We do turn into different people... And it can be very distressing for both partners...because of course the husband has to go through it too... Many marriages have ended because of it... And worse !.... You sound like you are dealing with it really well and supporting her the best you can...which is admirable... Many men cannot cope. ( To be honest with you, best way I can describe it, it's like being possessed!)... But you will both come through it. Can take several years... But you WILL get your wife back... And she will get "herself" back...

My wife and I often joke about it when it comes and goes. One instance we joke about was when she was 8mo. pregnant with her first husband. Some road work was being done I. Front of her house and she returned from grocery shopping and parked the car in front of the house. A construction worker came to her and told her she can't park there. Long story short, I am sure the worker won't do that again.

I do my best to understand what's going on and be supportive. It's not anyone's fault I know it's no fun for the woman. When the hormones are out of whack, I ride out the storm. When it's past I let her know I love her. Nothing more I can do.

I not so sure Hallow... They seem to talk about pretty much everything on here... There's the health section of course.. although I know it's not an illness as such. Might be worth looking through the lists and seeing what topics are covered. Or even maybe in lounge, or general beliefs. It might be worth a go ...maybe for men and women to chat about. Sometimes it does just help to chat. Because no-one can stop the process of it... Every woman goes through it... And many husband's have to live through it...I cannot see anyone being negative... Some people might have a little chuckle.. as I did saying chuck army out, send me in lol... But that's only because I DO know... If you wanted to think about it, let me know, I will support you with it.

Was driving to work today at 7:45 pm. I noticed now the sun is at the horizon. After today because of my work and lifestyle, I am going to see the sun only 3 hrs a day until spring. It's still warm out but the glorious sun is fading into the darkness of winter. In spiritual terms, a darkness where you learn to make your own light and not to fear the dark but to dance in it.

Recently I been looking for certain answers about religion. I couldn't find anything that made any logical/spiritual since. Until I read this written on a different thread, one I typically wouldn't even think about looking at..... Someone else wrote this.

my current opinion , religions had been a " social guidance" for human for perhaps thousand of years , with religions human perhaps had created customs , lifestyles and knowledge of the right verses the wrong and also the good act verses bad act .............but as human developed and population increased the role by religions is decreased ....now we have a system that more detail exceptable by all as we know it as Civil law....a written rules that certified ............but I of the current opinion as human developed into more advance stages from now ..perhaps hundreds years from now ....the knowledge of right and wrong , good or bad perhaps is not serve as a knowledge but a realization ...human will understand themselves far better than now ........human perhaps will developed into a sociaty that does not need civil law to guide or protect them ....and human will perhaps continue to developed and ...perhaps the final stage is self realization...Buddhism .
Buddhism to me is a process of knowing , discovering , understanding , experiencing OWNSELF by being awake by own realization leading to acceptance of ownself and own purity ..............there is no beliefs , no faith , no referral to Buddhism ...........

So perhaps in all solution of arguement , question on all action or re-action , answer to all question about life .......to me there is only one answer ... Buddhism .........

It's a beautiful night tonight. 59°f and a gentle breeze from the west. The full moon is shining bright in the clear sky. Bright enough I can make shadow hand puppets in the grass. All I hear tonight are the crickets. I look into the sky and see a passing airplane high in the night sky. All this is clearing my mind. This couldn't happen during the day. Looking to the sky during the day, the bright light would burn anyone's eyes.

Lovely...it's important to find a peaceful place to be that you love ....amid chaos/ life/ towns/ cities.. I lived all my life in a very large city... Nothing but buildings!... I moved to where I am to find some peace. Beach/ sea at the end of the street.. and if I walk 5 minutes in other direction I'm surrounded by miles and miles of countryside. I look out of my kitchen window and see all the seagulls on the rooftops..I love the seagulls too.

I am incapable of sleeping - it will not happen without drugs - I have to take a huge dose of medicine at night to sleep ----

I have been the worlds worst insomniac all of my life -- it's a curse and it's suffering -

thank god for medication

I changed apartments to get away from the sewer gas and they put me right next to a busy road - it is so loud that I can't even see straight - my window is right next to the street - there are loud mufflers and loud motorcycles -& sirens - don't forget the sirens & the light rail - there is also a sidewalk right by my window where loud mouthed evil people spew negativity at 2:00 in the morning -

not even my medication will let me sleep now -- it seems I just can't win

loud mufflers should be outlawed - I always wonder why people put buzzbomb mufflers on their cars - are they trying to be a menace ? is their goal to disturb the peace ? -- it is so loud - at least in the sewer gas filled apartment it was quiet most of the time
.
.I was just getting ready to start a lot of guided meditation as well -- it will probably be impossible now with all of the noise
.

I am the opposite of you.

I am out in less then 1 minute.

I once left Los Vegas, Nevada, USA and flew to Chicago.
I fell asleep before we took off and woke up when my ears was popping as we were about to land.

The worst case was when I left Taipei, Taiwan on a 14 hour flight to Los Angeles when I fell asleep before the plane took off and woke up when the plane was landing. I was in first class were you have your own private area and the wide chair folds down to a flat bed. I missed both meals which are unbelievable delicious!

I hate being a renter - it is communism hahaha. It's not rude. It's just what people do during the day. People mow lawns and work on projects in there garage.
I remember a few years ago I had a neighbor who rarely mowed there lawn but whenever they did they wouldn't pick up there garbage in there yard first. The sound of the mower hitting rocks and other garbage was the most annoying.

I have to say awake. I am at work. I work in 8 bed adult group home. Everyone sleeps here through the night. The hardest thing is coping with the intense boredom. From 11pm to 6am there's nothing to do but watch old sitcoms and think. It's a little after 3am here now.

I'm arriving late in this thread and I apologise for not having read it through. But I'm going to add a few thoughts....

I'm mightily relieved that I've never experienced chronic sleeplessness. I've had odd nights where sleep has been elusive and I am very aware how bad they leave me feeling so I pity those for whom sleepless nights are a regular pattern. I don't know how they cope. :icon_frown:

Now I'm 73 and the medics say us old farts need more sleep as we age but I don't see how we can choose to get more. Oh sure we can avoid stuff that threatens good sleep - booze, eating late, caffeine, over-stimuli etc. - but we can't actually control the amount of sleep we get. Let me correct that - I CAN'T control the amount of sleep I get although I can influence it a little using OTC sleep-aids. But that's hardly desirable in the longer term.

Hi Hallow - I only just seen this thread ive been busy battling with a virus that's giving problems to so many of us, to put it mildly - just had time to step back a little, look around and seen this thread...

I don't know if this will help - its what I use in my free talks local, or did do before this virus got in my way - not finished with you yet covid - we're coming gunning for you - strength of mind, and strong immune systems will beat you, just teaching everyone local, got a lot of stuff going on in my town with a lot of support, and its growing around many local towns the support that is in the UK, 100's and 100's of shopkeepers over many towns and two cities now - I'm coming for you bad virus, coming for you soon....... Sorry about that everyone - just having a a rant, I feel so much better now...

Anyway have a look at this see if just 'one thing' helps then its worth my time, good luck... everyone, you don't have to read all this unless sleeping is a problem...

--------
Better Sleeping / Nodding off Solutions

With all thats going on in our world at the moment, here is a bit of information on better sleep - this is more important than ever in 'our' fight against viruses and keeping our immune system 'high' - a good nights sleep......

The mind doesn't get a rest when sleeping, because of all the dreaming, it's always on the go, none stop - so we have to help make it have a rest, as in meditation.

When lying awake in the early hours, the mind likes to connect to problems and issues of the previous day or tomorrow or next week, and any problems the mind can find, it will, and dwell on them and keep you awake... So how to stop this - find the mind something to think about, and keep it busy with nice thoughts, to help you get some sleep.

I have some ideas... A year ago I was researching Mantra Meditation, do any of you know what a Mantra is? It's when in deep rest as in meditating you repeat a phrase like na ma na ma or I am that I am - repeating it over and over, to clear your mind of 'mental chatter' eg - troublesome thoughts, to give your mind a rest.

So when researching all these suggested mantra meditation phrases, I made some of my own - food related, so I started to think apple pie and custard, you just think the words over and over - then I went one step further and I thought when repeating the words over and over, I wonder if you can taste it, and you can - also chocolate cake, I can taste that as well... Just make sure you are slightly hungry, tastes better then.

You can use mind power to imagine flying around the park, or by the side of a canal or on a beach, or for instance over a golf course, or down by a river. So we just keep those options in our minds for a moment.

All this is to keep the mind busy with nice thoughts, to stop it wandering off thinking of day to day problems, which to be honest can be sorted out tomorrow, better to get good sleep.

So use your mind to imagine preparing yourself a nice big zero calorie chocolate cake, nicely finished off with chocolate all around the sides and chocolate covered all over the top - or a walnut cake or a lemon drizzel cake, and neatly sliced into 8 sections.

Then using your mind, imagine flying around your local park, eating cake, in which ever order you like - set the scene to create your play as in theater or on TV, you will have time to do this while lying awake, the goal here is to make it a short one to be continued.

And if you want to enhance the play, imagine your favorite singer or actor bringing you a slice of zero calorie cake of your choice, you can do this it's mind power at its best.

I would ease back on the food, violent films, and internet before going to bed

An important part of getting a good nights sleep is 'gratitude' - think of several things just before going to bed that you've done that please you during the day or last week.

Also just before retiring and in the morning first thing - recite in 'your mind' high energy words 'lovely gorgeous beautiful light' or something similar, several times. These are all high energy words that bring strength and relaxation to your body.

If you think someone you know will benefit reading this - just email it over

And if the chocolate cake and flying around the park doesn't work - bring out the number two plan - imagine an ice cream 'mr whippy style' - you know on a hot day and you get an ice cream with a flake in, just imagine eating it, that'll help you go to sleep.

Was doing some reading about survival and prepping. Do what the animals do. In my area, I like to watch woodpeckers and squirrels. because of winter they have to prep every year. They collect food for winter and spread it out over a large area. One would think it would be easier to keep in near and in one place. But they have to deal with other animals stealing there food. If it's spread out, it all can't be stolen at once.
