REceived today

Dear Paul,

WE'VE WON! The government has just confirmed they're totally scrapping the forest sell-off. The phoney consultation has been cancelled. The sinister legal changes to pave the way for privatisation have been dropped.

We did this together. Next time someone tries to tell any of us that signing petitions or emailing our MPs doesn’t work, we’ll know exactly what to say: “People power does work. Just look at the Save Our Forests campaign”.

Over half a million of us can feel very proud of what we've achieved together today.

On the 38 Degrees Facebook page (http://webmail.tiscali.co.uk/cp/ps/Mail/ExternalURLProxy?d=tiscali.co.uk&u=pjkennerley&url=http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/m/74c05a1f/2d4d32ae/5876fbe0/4674fcd5/183363995/VEsF/&urlHash=-3.131859032469357E279), members are celebrating. Fiona, for example, says "Fantastic news! And great for letting people see that actually there IS something they can do when they don't like what the government does, and their protest can make a difference!" Even Sky News (http://webmail.tiscali.co.uk/cp/ps/Mail/ExternalURLProxy?d=tiscali.co.uk&u=pjkennerley&url=http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/m/74c05a1f/2d4d32ae/5876fbe0/4674fcd7/183363995/VEsC/&urlHash=-1.6423757063010133E-221) seems to agree: "This is a great example of people power". [1]

38 Degrees members voted to start this campaign. We knew that making forests safe for future generations was something worth fighting for. So we signed the petition, emailed our MPs, put up posters in our local woodlands, organised local events, and chipped in for a people-powered opinion poll and national newspaper ads.

Local groups joined in, as did national organisations like the National Trust, Friends of the Earth, and Greenpeace, and celebrities who spoke out in the press. Together we stopped the sell-off plans. [2]

We need to keep an eye on what happens next, but we've shown that if forests are under threat, people power can come to the rescue. Right now, let's celebrate that we forced the government to back down from plans to sell up to 100% of our woodlands!

Hundreds of 38 Degrees members are celebrating now on our Facebook page and the website. You can click here to join in: http://www.facebook.com/peoplepowerchange (http://webmail.tiscali.co.uk/cp/ps/Mail/ExternalURLProxy?d=tiscali.co.uk&u=pjkennerley&url=http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/m/74c05a1f/2d4d32ae/5876fbe0/4674fcd5/183363995/VEsD/&urlHash=-3.420432816753119E-208) and http://www.38degrees.org.uk/forests-we-won-blog (http://webmail.tiscali.co.uk/cp/ps/Mail/ExternalURLProxy?d=tiscali.co.uk&u=pjkennerley&url=http://www.38degrees.org.uk/page/m/74c05a1f/2d4d32ae/5876fbe0/4674fcd0/183363995/VEsA/&urlHash=6.55249017762269E181)

And if you know someone who thinks writing to MPs or signing a petition is a waste of time, maybe you should forward them this email!

Thanks for everything you did to save our forests,

David, Hannah, Johnny and the 38 Degrees team

Thank God- I signed the petitions with you all over there in the UK and I put it all in the Creator's hands as well-- just as I am doing for all of the wildnerness areas her in the United States as well and other continents-- (especially the Amazon with that stupid dam they want to build- against the Native Amazon folks's wishes)

I told them in my petitions that they are making a grave mistake by destroying what assets they have in the UK-- and they are copying right after the jerk CEO's of the United States who have succeeded already in destroying what they can no longer get back--

Congratulations! That is such wonderful news! You've made my year! Saving Forests for Mother Earth and all of us is so im;portant. I wish more people were concerned for the importance of nature, versus the importance of corporations and the might dollar. It's a sad world we live in at times.

But this news is a tremendous bright spot! Again, CONGRATULATIONS!

:D Thanks all. We have the bit between our teeth now. Politicians beware ! This will be a typical Brit revolution, ever so polite but oh so stubborn and awkward :D

They, you know THEM ! were also trying to sell our NHS to the highest bidder. Well, we brought that one down too [600000 signatures ! ] and a Cabinet Minister may have to resign over it.

If the forests die like most of the Amazon has, where do the forest spirits go?

But spirits don't die. That's impossible. :/

They must go somewhere else like in the astral or spirit world.

Not impossible. Many cultures view spirits as simply being another kind of person. Ancient Greece for example, held that Hamadryads, which are nymphs that live in trees, die when the tree dies.

The whole "immortal spirit/soul" thing is mostly a more modern invention.

Sorta.

Lots of cultures didn't necessarily believe in a separate world or realm. Pre-Christian Germanic cultures didn't believe in a spirit world (as we think of it). And for the Celts the Otherworld was physically reachable. Either through a sea voyage or something similar. The Tuatha De Danann were said to simply live under the ground after the arrival of the Sons of Mil.

What a big celebration that would be! The US has a waaays to go... The trees are incredible resources of ancient knowledge.

But that's a kind of death, isn't it? in essence death is just the end of our physical presence, and usually a moving on of our spiritual one, so in that sense it seems like one in the same.

Hi Terry.

I wondered the same and asked Spirit Guide Sparrow (http://www.spiritguidesparrow.com/soulguidance.html) on a thread here and below is his response:

Q: What Happens To Tree Spirits When A Tree Is Chopped Down?

Trees are a part of the nervous system of the planet Earth, and they are each a part of a beautifully orchestrated set of sentient beings who operate as a unified entity across the expanse of billions of planets.

They are an interwoven intelligence that synchronises its consciousness with many different beings upon, within and of the planet Earth. Yet they speak with an independent voice of their own which human beings have not as yet understood.

The moment the tree senses impending danger its roots dig deep into the soil in defensive response and tenses up to defend itself like a giant limb. It excretes an atmospheric pheromone into the air alerting fauna and flora of your malevolence.

This pheromone is reproduced by many different life forms through a variety of biological mechanisms until the whole surrounding area is alerted to your intent.

When the tree is cut, and when the flower is plucked, know that they are known to screech in pain in the same way as would any human being, for they do indeed feel pain. They do indeed feel an emotional state. They do indeed feel the loss of one of their own in sorrow.

This is not romanticised fantasy, this is biological fact of sentient intelligence.

It is also fact that the sound of your voice carries the nature of your intent. The words you use and the things you say will be translated by the tree by means of harmonic tone frequency (HTF) receptivity.

This means the sounds emanating from your voice will be translated into a coded signal and sent through receptive channels along the nervous system of the tree. Similarly, a tree will respond to physical touch through the electromagnetic field you produce through your own nervous system.

So too can it perceive the pheromonic chemical substance produced by every living being, including humans.

The spirit of a tree can never be harmed for this is the essence which never leaves the spirit world. To speak of what is lost when a tree is unearthed from the ground we are to speak of its life force. This life force, or life stream, is similar to the energy body of the human soul but its characteristics are much different.

When the tree is cut down the tree does not perish straight away.

It will first thirst and dehydrate to death due to the amputation of its roots and imperative water source. After amputation the tree enters a biological state of comatose-induced decay, until it can no longer sustain itself apart from its severed nervous system and separation from Mother Earth.

The life stream of the tree is consequently nurtured by its guardians back to its root source in the spirit world to add to the experience of a particular origin of sentient beings. Beings who speak with one united voice, but are heard as many in perfect sync. In song do they speak, and always in harmony with the very core pulse of universal life.

They will speak to you deep within places you never knew existed within you. They speak with profound wisdom and immeasurable tolerance.

- Sparrow

I agree with Sparrow- Biologists have done studies on even houseplants having an awareness and feeling pain. The study was done on philodendrums. Anything with life has a soul -- souls do not die and souls do FEEL

I will always hug and touch trees-I also pray for them as I would any fellow human we share this life experience with.
